UniOil cuts kerosene, autogas prices
Another small oil firm cut its kerosene price Thursday to follow an earlier move by colleagues. Unioil Petroleum Philippines, Inc. cut kerosene prices by P7.60 per liter and autogas — liquefied petroleum gas for vehicles — by P1/liter. Unioil followed the lead of Total Philippines Corp. and Eastern Petroleum Corp. which cut autogas prices early this week. Its autogas now retails at P18.30/liter while kerosene sells at P39.68/liter. Meanwhile, consumer watchdog Consumer & Oil Price Watch Chairman Raul T. Concepcion said: "Pump prices must reflect [the big drop in oil prices]. But they do not." He noted oil prices, from a peak of $140 per barrel in July, has fallen by 67% as of Dec. 12. Mr. Concepcion said reflecting the 67% reduction in pump prices will have several positive effects such as an additional fare cut, while prices of prime commodities will remain stable because of lower transport and hauling costs. He added there has been a substantial decrease in ocean freight charges, a significant cost component in the pricing scheme of oil companies. Given recent developments, the Energy department will reconvene oil firms today on the price adjustments. The pump price reduction this month has been limited to P1-P3/liter for gasoline and P1 for diesel.
Cheap drugs program launched
The Department of Health (DoH) has identified several drugs that it will sell at three quarters of their original price in state-run hospitals and among local government units. Under the department's P100 project, the 23 medicines will be sold in one pack for P100 or less. The commonly used drugs are for asthma, diabetes, hypertension and infection, among others. Some of the drugs are imported by the Philippine International Trading Corp. and some have been manufactured by local generic drugs makers. The drugs will range from P25 to P100 as against their original prices of P160 to P1,900.
Gov't says OFW retrenchments could happen in five countries
AT LEAST FIVE countries that host overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have been identified as vulnerable to the global downturn by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA). POEA administrator Jennifer J. Manalili told a briefing yesterday that OFW retrenchments could occur in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Macau. Excluding the US, the others account for some 102,000 OFWs alone, she said. "We have identified countries that are going to be affected. There are also some other export-oriented countries that could be hit too," Ms. Manalili said. OFWs in Japan, Taiwan and South Korea work mostly in manufacturing and other export-oriented sectors, while those in Macau work in tourism. The POEA said there are approximately 50,000 Filipinos in South Korea; 37,000 in Taiwan, 5,000-10,000 in Japan, and around 5,000 in Macau. The Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan, however, has a higher number: 61,600 in the manufacturing industry alone. It predicted some 6,000 would be laid off, mostly from the garment and electronic subsectors which serve the US market. Taiwan, however, is expected to continue hiring given a planned government stimulus package worth 6.8 billion Taiwan dollars. The POEA, meanwhile, said some 50,000 OFWs are expected to be displaced because not all Filipinos in those countries work in vulnerable sectors. "Our health workers are not in trouble," Ms. Manalili said. The POEA reported that so far 2,247 OFWs have been displaced due to the financial crisis, with most, or 2,087, coming from Taiwan.
