THE LAND Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has asked taxi drivers to start issuing manual receipts in preparation for its mandatory implementation in June. LTFRB Chairman Albert H. Suansing said in a phone interview yesterday that "cab drivers have been directed to issue receipts to passengers as early as January of this year."
On June 1, taxi operators with license plates ending in 1 and 6 are required to install metered machines capable of issuing receipts before their units can undergo re-sealing, Mr. Suansing said. Other numbers will be covered in succeeding months.
He said each meter would cost between P12,000 and P15,000 apiece.
Starting January 2010, all taxi units are expected to comply with the directive or their operators will have to pay graduated fines starting at P500 for the first offense.
"Passengers have the right to demand receipts; and if not granted, they can text the unit's plate number and their complaint to 4813," Mr. Suansing said. "Discussions had been conducted with cab drivers and operators, so they cannot argue that they were not informed or consulted on this matter," he added.
